Novel soundtracks aren't unique. Most authors write to music. So, I'm not unusual when I say that music is a big part of my creative process. Music inspires my story-brain. So, often specific songs tell the story from the perspective of a specific character. Sometimes it's more general--like the mood of a place or outlook of a group of imaginary people. Anyway, y'all can blame Fran Wilde for today's post. She asked for a soundtrack mix from me. I figured I might as well give you all of them at once. Because I'm thorough that way. [cough] Okay. I love this shit. That's the truth. Of Blood and Honey Mix Magic Man -- Heart (for Kathleen and Bran) Teenage Kicks -- The Undertones (for Liam and Mary Kate) Street Fighting Man -- The Rolling Stones (opening scene for novel) Kashmir -- Led Zeppelin (the infamous chapter 3) The Boys Are Back in Town -- Thin Lizzy Streets Of Sorrow/Birmingham Six -- The Pogues Nights in White Satin -- The Moody Blues Mull of Kintyre -- Paul McCartney & Wings Hotel California -- The Eagles (Frankie and Liam) Long Cool Woman (In a Black Dress) -- The Hollies (car chase #1) Bang a Gong (Get It On) -- T Rex (car chase #1) My Way of Saying Goodbye -- Arlene Bishop (Mary Kate departs) Bad Penny -- Rory Gallagher (Liam is high and Oran is angry) Blockbuster -- Sweet (for D.I. I had less time with the novel for a start--only a year or so as opposed to five years. It's also not bound to the '70s because by then I needed a break. Every era has a certain tonal style. My tastes are eclectic. I love mixing it up. If I can't, I grow bored. (Plus, I've nothing to bring to Music Night. :)) Blue Skies from Pain Mix Father Forgive -- Will (opening scene) Sober -- Tool Wish You Were Here -- Pink Floyd Golden Slumbers -- Mindy Gledhill Carry That Weight -- The Beatles Can't You Hear Me Knocking -- The Rolling Stones (Liam remembers Mary Kate) Pretty Vacant -- Sex Pistols Seven Deadly Sins -- The Outcasts (party in East Belfast) Blitzkrieg Bop -- The Ramones (party in East Belfast) 78 R.P.M. -- Stiff Little Fingers (party in East Belfast) Oro, Se Do Bheatha 'bhaile -- Sinéad O'Connor The Foggy Dew (W/ Sinead O'Conner) -- The Cheiftains Little Lion Man -- Mumford & Sons (Bran talks to Liam) Gimme Shelter -- The Rolling Stones Brand New Cadillac -- The Clash (car chase) The Ballroom Blitz -- Sweet (car chase) Mad World -- Michael Andrews & Gary Jules from Donnie Darko Wild Horses -- The Rolling Stones Life On Mars? -- David Bowie Street Life -- Roxy Music I Wanna Be Sedated -- The Ramones Evil Woman -- ELO And now for the more recent stuff. I didn't go with period pieces for the most part. I like classical music and sometimes I use it, but my imagination needs lyrics to chew on. The actual mix is super long because individual characters get mixes these days. So, this is a truncated list.
