Good morning, y'all. Ready to get that blood coursing through your system with some righteous anger? I thought so. :) Let's get started, shall we? First, today's video:
Literary/Entertainment: I'm going to be making my way through this list for the next few months. I've read some of them already, but I've a lot of reading to do. 50 Science Fiction Essentials Written by Women. And You cannot be 'well read' without reading women. Meanwhile, this shit happens: Authors Guild and RWA Prevail in Court Defending Authors in “Cocky” Trademark Dispute. Yeah. Not just no, but FUCK NO. So glad that got slapped down. For the record, this is why we need writer's organizations. Have this great article on mermaids, and How Reese Witherspoon is flipping the script on Hollywood.
General: Why is breast cancer mortality higher for African-American women than for white women? From the article: "Death rates for black women decreased by 23 percent, while the death rates for white women declined by 42 percent." More focus on the triple-negative breast cancer variant is needed. NOW. Add to this the fact that black women are at a bigger risk of dying in/from child birth. The medical system is clearly letting down the black community. As difficult as it is to get proper treatment as a white woman--male doctors often dismiss women's pain[1]--I can only imagine how racism factors into that. So, yes. This problem is real, and it needs to stop. Next? Ooof. This country is going to have an awful lot of clean up work to do the instant the white supremacist orange mold is pried out of office. Like, so much work. In Narrow Decision, Supreme Court Decides In Favor Of Baker Over Same-Sex Couple. Game producer, Jessica Price talks about the connection between anti-semitism and modern "scientific" racism. And Nora (N.K.) Jemisin talks about the alt-right's unchecked power over YouTube and why parents should be aware of how that affects their kids. Speaking of kids, I've seen recent discussion questioning the validity of intelligence and SAT tests due to inherent racism. And this is one of them: Why Rich Kids Are So Good at the Marshmallow Test. And next, Emma González and Rowan Blanchard on the Challenges of Activism. This illustrated article made me happy because it instantly made me think of Blackthorne (and specifically my characters Dylan, Dar, and Mal): The American Revolution’s Greatest Leader Was Openly Gay. It also made me giggle with glee because if you scroll down to the end and see the monument dedicated to him--it's a statue of Von Steuben with a naked man. I can't help imagining conservatives walking past that, thinking "That's classical art, that. Very proper." and Von Steuben laughing his ass off. Maybe that's just me. (I have to admit, I love shit like that.) Nigeria's Senate to launch investigation after CNN report on sex-for-grades scandal. And Why Your Criticisms Of Intersectionality And Identity Politics Sound Ridiculous. And 7 Ways to Tell If Your Partner Might Be Manipulative. And We Need To Talk About Racism In The Tattoo Industry. And here's a Twitter thread about Greenwood, Oklahoma. And Transgender woman in migrant caravan dies in ICE custody. We need to END ICE, y'all. END IT.

[1] My sister nearly died of endometriosis because our family doctor assumed she was being a babyhead when she was fainting or laying on the bathroom floor screaming every month. Like that's a thing.
