Oh, shit...

Well, Brexit happened. If you don't understand why that's bad, watch this.
It's true. The British conservatives went with the Batshit. I'm terrified for my friends in the UK. This is already destabilizing the UK economy in a big way. (See also this.) I've heard that they're headed for a recession much like our 2008 recession. (That was horrible, and I wouldn't wish it on anyone. It took us forever to pull out of it. Even so, the US economy is fragile enough that this is going to effect us too. [shudder]) I hear this vote may not be actionable. I hope that's the case. I really do. I'm hoping that this referendum is the wake up call xenophobic, miserly conservative circles have needed, worldwide. Anti-intellectualism and nationalism does not go good directions. It simply doesn't. Please, please, please can we learn this lesson now?

Of course some people are already spinning this outcome as the fault of liberal elite, for example someone we both know, whose name I will not mention, had a post on FB saying that this is what happens when the elite ignore the redneck, blue-collar vote. He's basically placing the blame on the ones who actually voted against brexit, saying essentially "well, that's what you get.".

And that's one the biggest reasons why I don't have an online connection with the person in question. On the internet, he's a sexist, selfish blowhard, and I quite honestly don't want to think of him that way. It's also why we don't see one another all that often. Even if I pretend it isn't there...it is and I know it.

Ultimately, he's wrong-headed. (As you know.) Tea Party policies have had all the power within the state of Kansas for years. There has been no effective resistance from the left. Kansas is bankrupt, and they've no one to blame but themselves. Just as the responsibility sits squarely upon those who now voted for Brexit. The same goes for those who voted to make Trump the GOP nominee (regardless of their reasons and yes, I know some people voted for him as a 'joke.') Voting is a weighty civic responsibility. It's not a joke. It's not some pointless thing we do. Maybe someone should re-introduce him to the idea of responsibility? Blaming others for your actions is something teenagers do ffs.
