Feminist Monday Summer Solstice Edition

I live in Texas and am no longer in school. Thus, I hate summer. That said, may your summer not be sticky and broiling hot. May the big burning thing in the sky not murder your entire yard. And may an entire wing of mosquitos not take flight outside your door. Or, at least, may you afford to be anywhere else but Texas for the duration. :)
And now...those Feminist links. Ready? Let's do this thing. Today's videos:
After watching that video, now imagine being a woman and working on and/or testing those game mechanics as part of your job. Yeah. That. Now add sexism and sexual harassment on the job on top of that. And they wonder why women don't feel welcome in the gaming industry. [rolls eyes] The problem isn't entirely that these game mechanics exist. It's that they are so prevalent. For the record, I have worked in the gaming industry as both a tester and a graphic designer. So, I'm speaking from experience.
Literary/Entertainment: These first two links are (sadly) related: Game Developer Barbie Can Actually Code! and Sexist Trolls Are Attacking Barbie for Her New Career as a Game Developer. Way to illustrate the problem guys. In other news, a young man attending E3 accidentally drank a drink intended for his friend who happened to be a woman. As a result, he was drugged. It's understandable that women were angered by his shock that this problem truly exists. It's yet another moment demonstrating that women aren't heard until a (white cis) man experiences the problem. Paramount Dates Its Splashy Amy Adams Sci-Fi Tale ‘Arrival’ For Awards Season. I'm looking forward to that one. Since it's based on a Ted Chiang story, I suspect it'll be great. The New Nazi Captain America Is the Hero That Bigoted Comic Book Fans Deserve. After reading that article, I'm starting to understand why the writer did what he did. And you know what? I get it. This, even though I also understand why it upset Jewish fans so much. Five Badass Women in Cyberpunk Who DGAF About Expectations. I'd also like to add Ren Waram's Escapology to that list. It's a fun read, y'all. If I hadn't been on deadline and a slow reader--I so would've blurbed that book.

General: First female teen to win Ohio masonry competition bumped from national contest. And the next two links are related: Can You Spot Why This Student Was Sent Home From School? and Why I organized a 'no bra day' at my high school. No one thought, "Gee, should male teachers be staring at underage students' breasts that closely?" No one considered that might be a problem? In happier news, Norway becomes fourth country in the world to allow trans people to determine their own gender. And also, in the United States: Neither Male Nor Female: Oregon Resident Legally Recognized As Third Gender. W00t! :) In case you don't understand all the anxiety in liberal and conservative circles regarding Trump have this link to a series of tweets made during a recent Trump rally. An Open Letter To Those Who Oppose A Two-Woman Ticket. Biphobia and the Pulse Massacre. The university gender pay gap is down to neoliberal orthodoxy. In Orlando, as Usual, Domestic Violence Was Ignored Red Flag. Chuck Wendig: Recipe for a shooting. And John Scalzi: Thoughts and Prayers. This may shock you: Hillary Clinton is fundamentally honest.

Trigger Warning: WHITE STUDENTS DRAG 12-YEAR-OLD BLACK GIRL WITH ROPE AROUND NECK WHILE SCHOOL DOES NOTHING. Okay, Texas. Let me help you out here. This is what anywhere else in the world would be considered a Hate Crime. This isn't a "boys will be boys" moment. This is some serious, life-threatening shit. Gah.
