Time to put away those white shoes, ladies. Or not. LOL. Ah, old, silly, fashion rules.
Hello, everyone. For non-Americans, happy Monday. For Americans, happy long-ass weekend. In either case, I hope your day is a good one. :) Let's start with today's video, something I'll call "Why I was uncomfortable with Big Bang Theory and Stopped Watching Pretty Quickly." AKA "Misogyny is not fucking Adorkable, you assholes."
I used to buy that whole "Male Geeks are more emotionally mature and smarter than Male Jocks" routine. Years of writing SF while female combined with Gamergate sure as hell cured me of that illusion. And now for those links.
Entertainment/Literary: Need something funny this morning? Have a Twitter thread wherein the ye old "crowdsourcing to find women in literature/arts/science/history" is shown for the lazy bullshit that it is via gender flipping. I bring you @Manwhohasitall's "My friend is a history teacher. She's compiling a list of great historical figures and she needs a male to add to the list. Suggestions?" It's full of gems like "are you sure men existed in the stone age? i mean, there's just no proof." LOL. Next up, L’Oreal fires model Munroe Bergdorf after she blasts white supremacy. FFS, we really need to get over the mistaken idea that white supremacy is a legitimate political position, America. IT IS NOT. Fuck that shit. And in much better news, Drew Barrymore Will Produce a Female-Centric Horror Anthology Show for the CW. I can't wait! Heard about the gender-flipped "Lord of the Flies" that Hollywood is toying with? Author Libba Bray (who wrote a Feminist take on Lord of the Flies called Beauty Queens, and OMG you should read it) destroys the male-authored script in the most brilliant fashion possible with Hollywood's Woman Problem. Is sexual harassment still a problem at conventions? Oh, hell yes. However, it's apparent that the SFF community is making progress. That said, here is Cat Valente's Twitter thread about a recent experience. Lastly, on the heels of everything that's come out about Joss Whedon, here's another story. www.hollywoodreporter.com/features/a-filmmaker-his-actresses-an-alarming-pattern-behavior-he-s-getting-some-sort-revenge-women-1033519.

General: Here's something that should scare the crap out of you->Nazis buying up neighborhoods in order to push people of color out. “Right-Wing Gentrification Gangs”: White Nationalists and Atlanta Property Development. There are, in fact, laws against that shit, but speaking as someone who lives in a liberal city that is "mysteriously" segregated...the laws in question aren't being upheld in any meaningful way. This nonfiction book looks interesting: Reflections on Violence by Hannah Arendt. (I'm always looking for analysis around and about violence because violence is a huge part of SF and F. I feel it's my responsibility as a creator to employ violence in my stories in thoughtful ways.) Congress must block Trump's ban on transgender people in the military:www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/congress-must-block-trumps-ban-on-transgender-people-in-the-military/2017/08/29/fed5a154-8c24-11e7-8df5-c2e5cf46c1e2_story.html
