Good morning and Happy Monday! (Well, a woman can hope, can't she? ;)) Ready for those links? Cool! So am I!
Today's video (because diversity is today's theme) is brought to you by Texan in Tokyo:
Bonus video:
Literary/Entertainment: The first link is about a Nigerian comics startup which is creating African superheroes. I'm so happy to see that. I've had a lot of frustrating conversations with my husband about how the (American) comic book industry seems totally incapable of breaking free of rehashing fifty year old characters and concepts. But they can do something new! They have the power! Other genres do it all the time! And he's never able to come up with an adequate reason for it. (And people complain about Hollywood? Ha!) And now, today's theme: What happened in Brisbane, Tempest Bradford talks about what is and what isn't Cultural Appropriation, Marc Jacobs and the Dreadlock controversy, Jim Hines' response to Lionel Shriver's Speech, Off the cuff, but on the record, Fox Meadows' Identity and Narrative, Aliette de Bodard's Cultural appropriation article, and Mary Robinette Kowal's A Textile Metaphor for Cultural Appropriation. My position on it is here. Muslim Designer makes history. Why Charles M. Schultz gave Peanuts a Black Character in 1968. Nicola Griffith talks about her writing space. Advanced Syle's Mara West demonstrates Rosie the Riveter Look. Haunting Prose Poem about why we need Feminism.
General: I talk a lot about the US prison industry, and I include this link here because it disproportionately affects persons of color. Did you know we are having the largest prison strike in history? Black Women and the War on Drugs. And the next link I found on a friend's (Jaym Gates') FB wall. Keep making noise. The article alone is a worthy read. However, when I spotted it an asshole male had actually responded on Jaym's wall with, "Did they ever decide on a price?" I replied, "Wow. Thanks for that lovely demonstration." and he came back with, "You're welcome, little lady." I ended it with, "Welcome to my block list." Yeah. That happened. In case you didn't believe the pay gap was real: Men with 2 years experience earn more than women with 6 years experience. It's even worse when you factor in race. (Which the article doesn't.) President Obama permanently protects Planned Parenthood. If you leave your kids alone, it's not predatory strangers who are a risk. A Woman Turned Down an Arranged Marriage. The potential candidate did a marvelous job of proving her choice to have been the right one. Yeah. Don't be That Guy. Despite a Century of Progress, Hillary Clinton Still Faces Outrageous Sexism, MTP misogyny. "Nana Clinton?" Do they even hear themselves? and To find Hillary Clinton likable, we must learn to view women as complex beings. And Why are men violent? asks a question I've long wondered about. It's part of an overdue conversation about the negative affects of patriarchy on men. For example: young men are statistically more accident prone than young women. American auto insurance companies have known this for a very long time. In spite of this, no one has bothered to question why. Could it be because men are taught to push every boundary, including the laws of physics? Because 'damned manly'? Appalled Graphic Designer shows Girls' Life Magazine what their cover should look like. In our latest episode of "Yes, people of color existed in medieval Europe": Historical multi-racial families in the House of the Medici. Robots will eliminate 6% of all US jobs by 2021. <sarcasm font>But Uber and Lyft are so great, y'all! They aren't predatory at all! They treat their employees so well!</sarcasm font> And our final link for this section: West Virginia cop fired for not killing unarmed man. Trigger Warning: We need to talk about the child rape lawsuit filed against Donald Trump. Dr. Oz Show edited out Trump's creepy responses about his own daughter. I've long been skeeved out by how he treats his daughter, Ivanka. The fact that he's running with her as his First Lady surrogate rather than his wife Melania? Yeah. Missouri Bisexual Woman and her mother murdered by Homophobe in suspected Hate Crime.
