I'm excited about Netflix's latest super hero project. Netflix's Newest Superhero Drama Is About a Single Mother and Her Super-Powered Son. That looks so good!
Did you know that pink used to signify male? I didn't understand that using pink to signify the gender of girl babies is less than a century old. I have noticed that worrying about whether or not strangers get the gender of babies correct is more of a thing than it used to be. (Hell, my own sister is making a big deal out of gender marking her puppy.) I get why it's important to not miss-gender adults, but babies? And it kills me that the same exact adult will blithely ignore the gender preference of adults and then get really exacting in addressing baby genders. (We can't have that boy mistaken for a girl, can we? That might de-masculinate him. Masculinity is fragile, after all. [eyeroll]) Today's video:
Why do I have a feeling that we've just been given absolutely every scene that features Wonder Woman in the entire film? Probably because this movie was shot before WW grossed all the money and everything has focused on Batman up to this point. (And still does.) [sigh] That said...is it bad that I still want to see this version of Aquaman?
Entertainment/Literary: "The Death and Life of Marsha P. Johnson" Creator Accused of Stealing Work from Filmmaker Reina Gossett. [sigh] Yes, it's important to get these stories out there. However, it's super not cool to steal other people's hard work and claim it for your own. So FFS don't do that. (I can't help feeling that he should help promote Reina Gossett's work in addition to the...non-apology--which I suppose the controversy is when I think about it.) Brie Larson Tweeted About the Importance of Believing Women & the Response Proved Her Whole Point. Oh, Twitter.
General: The Harvard Business Review discusses The 5 Biases Pushing Women Out of STEM. I've included this next link because I believe it's related to student debt and underemployment--both are issues which statistically affect more women than men, regardless of race. As Overdose Deaths Pile Up, a Medical Examiner Quits the Morgue. Another medical-related link is, California decided it was tired of women bleeding to death in childbirth. I think I pointed this out before. One of the biggest reasons why childbirth death rates are skyrocketing in the US is connected to the high rate of unnecessary C-sections. Vaginal childbirth is time-consuming and difficult to predict, and in this fast-paced world...well...there's not much room for that. And since medicine has a misogynist slant[1], it doesn't surprise me that male doctors perform so many unnecessary C-sections. There are even higher rates of death among mothers of color. (Statistically, black mothers receive far less healthcare than white mothers.) Another related story is, THE NEW MIDLIFE CRISIS. Why (and How) It's Hitting Gen X Women. Next up: The Rules of the Gun Debate. We Need To Talk About Racism In The Tattoo Industry. James Baldwin, I Am Not Your Negro and the construction of race. Colbert asked Ta-Nehisi Coates if he has hope for America. Coates said no. Meet Jagmeet Singh: Sikh lawyer, martial artist and new NDP leader. Trigger Warning: I'm dropping this here because of the details are present and a lot of what I'm reading should be classified as rape or sexual abuse. Harvey Weinstein sacked after sexual harassment claims. Meryl Streep speaks out about Harvey Weinstein. Harvey Weinstein Paid Off Sexual Harassment Accusers for Decades. Harvey Weinstein Is Fired After Sexual Harassment Reports.

[1] Do I really need to point out that women's healthcare isn't valued in the US? Do I really need to show you how drugs weren't tested on women until recently because their "shifting hormones impacted the return data" and none of the drug companies paused to think that maybe that was a problem? Like it might be dangerous for potential female patients? Nah. Male is the default, y'all. [eye roll]
