Good morning! Time for some Monday rage? Cool! Let's get that blood moving, then. Shall we? :)
Today's video:
And now, the links.
Entertainment/Literary: Why are people so offended by Charlize Theron's son dressing like a Disney Princess? Black Heroes Matter. There is no secret to writing about people who do not look like you. I'd definitely say the key is empathy, not sympathy. There is a distinction. Nnedi Okorafor talks about her Hugo win. Justine Larbalestier re-posts her Wiscon GOH speech. Foz Meadows says "Dear Fandom, don't be this guy." The war on female speech continues. Tina Fey doesn't believe this is the 'Golden Age' for female comedians. The bloody comic Monstress is a response to Game of Thrones, Ex Machina, and The Smurfs.

General: 7,000 deaths in custody. Database shows how people died during encounters with the criminal justice system in Texas. If you look at that as part of the larger picture of our problematic criminal justice system (including the private prison system)...yeah. That's damned terrifying. And yes, if an overwhelming number of persons of color are in the system it is racist. Now, add into it the fact that they're now arresting people for unpaid student loan debt in Texas. And as if this wasn't bad enough, now drop in the fact that police are using military grade surveillance equipment. In addition, women are being incarcerated at dramatically increasing rates. Just...argggh! I'm scared of what the estrogen shortage might do to trans women like me. I have friends that this situation directly effects. Of kimono and cultural appropriation. Which is to say, the subject is complicated, damn it. Stop trying to make it simple. Taking short cuts in situations that require thought actually hurts people. Hey University of Chicago, I'm an academic & survivor. I use trigger warnings and here's why. 7 of the less noted but still very problematic attacks on Hillary Clinton. The Real Reason Why Women Drink. Why can't middle-aged women have long hair? What my divorce taught me about latent sexism in the financial system.
